Housed inside this specific alarm is a very small amount of radioactive material that is situated between two electronically charged plates. It’s important to note that the amount of radioactive material used in this alarm is not enough to cause any harm to a human being. A constant current of ionized air between the two electronically charged plates then takes place, and whenever smoke enters between the current, then the current itself is interrupted, thereby causing the alarm to be triggered.
*The final type of fire alarm monitoring is a combination, which is a type of alarm that features both photoelectric and ionization detecting technologies. In terms of installing this type of alarm in your home, there are arguments both for and against it, as well as having both photoelectric and ionization alarms as a way to help maximize protection in your home. Perhaps the biggest argument against combination alarms is that they don’t seem to be as great as a single detection method as opposed to the other single units.
In terms of which system is recommended the most, the United States Fire Administration states the following:
“Because both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms are better at detecting distinctly different yet potentially fatal fires, and because no one can predict what type of fire might start in a home, the USFA recommends that every home and place where people sleep be equipped with either (a) both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms, or (b) dual sensor smoke alarms (which contain both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors.”
